TVDSB Trustee Candidate Survey - Matthew Reid

On September 14th, I emailed the London candidates for Thames Valley District School Board (TVDSB) Trustee.  As outlined in a previous blog post, this was done to provide more exposure to this important position and to give Londoners an opportunity to get more insight into the candidates.

Matt Reid - Candidate Wards 2,3,4,5,6
Below are my answers to your questions. Thank you for taking an interest in the Trustee elections!

Why do you want to be a school board trustee?
I am currently the Trustee for London Wards 2-6 and I recognize there is still a lot of great work left to be done. We have major decisions that will drastically change the landscape of Thames Valley in the coming years and I believe my experience and background would be an asset. A School Board Trustee can make a positive impact on their schools and I want to continue our work on improving instructional leadership and providing the best education for our children.

What do you consider to be the most important role of a school board trustee?
I believe the constituency work is by far the most important aspect of being a Trustee. You are often the first contact for parents that are having difficulties and it is so rewarding helping parents and students work through their concerns. I know that when someone e-mails their trustee they expect timely response and to know that they are being listened and that their elected representative is advocating on their behalf.

What do you believe to be the most important issue for the TVDSB to address over the next four years?
The school board has done a great job with handling the difficult task of elementary school closings and reorganization due to the declining enrollment that has occurred in the last 10 years. We now need to look to our Secondary Schools to ensure they are meeting the needs of our students and we are providing the programming options our students need. This will be the most important issue over the next four years for our board as it will impact all of our 22,000 secondary school students.

What skills and experience do you have that qualify you to be a school board trustee?
I am currently the School Trustee and have served on over 8 School Board committees including Negotiations Advisory Committee, Budget Advisory Committee, Policy Working Committee and First Nations Advisory Committee. I was also the Student Trustee in 2003-2004 and served as the Provincial President of the Ontario Student Trustees Association. I am a Lawyer in London specializing in Civil Litigation and serve on several charity boards.

How can voters get in touch with you for more information?
